SEO vs AEO: What Changes When Customers Ask AI Instead of Google

SEO vs AEO comes down to one shift: SEO earns you a place in a list of links, while AEO (answer engine optimization) earns you a place inside the answer itself. The good news is that they are not competing strategies, because the AI tools people now ask for recommendations mostly build their answers from the same pages that already rank well, so the smartest move in 2026 is to run one program that serves both.

That still leaves plenty that is different: how customers phrase questions, whether they ever click, how you measure success and what kind of content gets picked. This guide walks through each difference in plain terms, shows what to keep doing, and gives you a practical way to split your time and budget. If you want the full how-to on getting cited by AI tools, start with our AEO guide for small businesses; this post is the side-by-side comparison.

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

Search engine optimization is the work of getting your pages to rank in search results so people click through to your site. Answer engine optimization is the work of getting your business named, quoted or linked when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot or Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode a question.

The easiest way to see the gap is to compare what each one is aiming at.

SEOAEO
The goalRank a page in the top resultsGet your business cited or recommended inside an AI answer
Typical query"bakery brooklyn" (2 to 4 words)"Where can I get a gluten free birthday cake in Brooklyn for Saturday?" (a full sentence or two)
What winsRelevance, authority, links, page experienceClear, quotable answers, consistent facts about you across the web, trusted mentions
Unit of successA page and its positionA passage, a fact or a brand name
The clickThe whole pointOptional; many answers end without one
How you measure itRankings, impressions, clicks, conversionsCitation checks, AI referral traffic, branded search, leads who say "ChatGPT sent me"
Main toolsGoogle Search Console, GA4, Semrush, AhrefsManual prompt testing, GA4 referral reports, newer AI visibility trackers

Notice that the inputs overlap far more than the outputs. Good content, a technically sound site and a strong reputation feed both. What changes is the format of the content and the way you judge whether it is working.

Is AEO replacing SEO in 2026?

No, and anyone selling you "AEO instead of SEO" is selling you half a strategy. Here is why.

Google's AI Overviews are generated from pages in Google's own index, and Google says the feature now reaches more than 2 billion people a month. ChatGPT, which OpenAI said had around 900 million weekly users in early 2026, runs live web searches when a question needs current information and uses its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to find pages. Perplexity and Copilot also search the web before they answer. In every case, a page that cannot be crawled, indexed and trusted by a search system is very unlikely to be quoted.

So SEO is the foundation and AEO is the layer on top. What has changed is the payoff. Pew Research Center tracked real browsing in 2025 and found that people who saw a Google AI summary clicked a traditional result about 8% of the time, compared with about 15% when no summary appeared. Ranking still matters, but ranking alone now delivers fewer visits for the same position. AEO is how you get value from the searches that never turn into a click.

What actually changes when customers ask AI instead of Google?

Four things change, and each one affects how you should write and what you should track.

1. The question gets longer and more specific

People type fragments into Google. They talk to AI tools in full sentences, often with their situation attached: budget, location, deadline, what they have already tried. That means one page can match hundreds of long, slightly different questions, provided it covers the real decision factors. A service page that says "we offer bookkeeping" matches almost nothing. A page that says who it is for, what it costs, how long it takes and what is included matches a lot.

2. The shortlist shrinks from ten to three

A results page shows ten blue links plus ads, maps and shopping boxes. An AI answer usually names two to five options, sometimes just one. Being number seven on Google still earns the occasional click. Being the fourth business an AI tool considered and then dropped earns nothing. The bar for being clearly the best fit for a specific need has gone up.

3. The click becomes optional

Many AI answers solve the question on the spot. When someone does click, they usually arrive further along: they already know your price range and why you were recommended. In our experience, AI referral traffic tends to be small in volume but high in intent. Judge it by leads and sales, not by sessions.

4. Other people describe you

On Google, your title tag and meta description are your pitch. In an AI answer, the model writes the pitch for you, pulling from your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews, Reddit threads and press mentions. If those sources disagree about what you do, where you are or what you charge, the model either hedges or leaves you out. Consistency across the web has moved from nice to have to essential.

What stays the same between SEO and AEO?

Most of the fundamentals. If you have been doing SEO properly, you have already done a good share of AEO work. These all count for both:

  • Crawlability and speed. Pages that load quickly, render without heavy scripts and are linked from your navigation get found by every crawler, not just Googlebot.
  • Helpful, original content. Pages that answer a real question better than the competition rank better and get quoted more often.
  • Authority from trusted sources. Links and mentions from respected publications, associations and local media help rankings and make AI tools more confident naming you.
  • Reviews. Volume, recency and the detail in reviews feed local rankings and give AI tools specific language to repeat.
  • Structured data. Schema markup such as Organization, LocalBusiness, Product and FAQPage helps machines read your facts correctly.
  • Clean site structure. One clear page per service or product category, with internal links that explain how they relate.

If your site has technical problems, fix those first. On Shopify, for example, duplicate collection URLs and thin product descriptions hurt both kinds of visibility; our list of Shopify SEO fixes covers the common ones.

How do you optimize a page for both SEO and AEO?

You do not need two versions of your website. You need pages written so a search engine can rank them and an AI tool can lift a clean answer from them. Here is the routine we use when rewriting a page for both:

  1. Pick the main search term and the main question. The term is what goes in your title and headings for SEO, for example "commercial cleaning NYC". The question is what a person would ask an AI tool, for example "How much does office cleaning cost in Manhattan?". Cover both on the same page.
  2. Answer in the first two sentences. Put the direct answer at the top, then explain. AI tools favor passages that make sense on their own, and readers skimming on a phone do too.
  3. Turn headings into questions people actually ask. Use Google's "People also ask" box, your sales calls and your inbox as sources. Each H2 should be answerable in a short paragraph underneath it.
  4. Add the specifics competitors avoid. Price ranges, timelines, who it is not for, what is included, service areas, minimum order sizes. Specific facts are what get quoted.
  5. Use tables for comparisons and prices. A table is easy for a model to parse and easy for a reader to scan.
  6. Add a short FAQ with schema. Four or five real questions with 40 to 80 word answers, marked up with FAQPage schema.
  7. Show who is behind it. A clear business name, address, contact details, credentials and an updated date. Trust signals help rankings and help AI tools decide you are a real, current business.
  8. Check that your facts match everywhere. Your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, LinkedIn and industry directories should all say the same thing.

That is the whole method. It is mostly good writing with structure, and it is exactly what our SEO and AEO service is built around.

How do you measure AEO when there is no ranking report?

This is the part that frustrates most owners. Google Search Console counts impressions and clicks from AI Overviews inside your normal search data, but it does not break them out separately. ChatGPT and Perplexity do not give you a dashboard at all. You have to piece it together.

Four ways to track AI visibility

  • A monthly prompt test. Write 15 to 25 questions your customers ask, run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode, and record whether you are named, linked or absent. Keep the wording the same each month so the results are comparable.
  • AI referrals in GA4. Build an exploration or a custom channel group that filters sessions by source for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Watch conversions from these sources, not just visits.
  • Branded search in Search Console. When AI tools mention you without a link, people often search your name afterwards. A rise in branded queries is an indirect but useful signal.
  • Ask new leads. Add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" as an option on your "How did you hear about us?" question. It is the cheapest attribution you will ever set up.

Paid AI visibility trackers now exist from established SEO platforms and a crop of newer specialists, typically priced from around $100 to several hundred dollars a month. They save time once you are tracking dozens of prompts, but a spreadsheet and an hour a month is enough to start.

How should a small business split budget between SEO and AEO?

For most small businesses, it is not a split so much as a sequence: fix the foundation, then shape the content, then build reputation. The right weighting depends on how your customers buy.

Business typeWhere to focus firstRough weighting
Local service (clinic, trades, salon, restaurant)Google Business Profile, reviews, local citations, service pages with prices70% local SEO, 30% AEO content and consistency
Ecommerce brandTechnical health, collection and product copy, comparison and buying guides60% SEO, 40% AEO content and product data
B2B or professional servicesIn-depth guides, pricing and process pages, third-party mentions50% SEO, 50% AEO content and digital PR
New business with no site historyA clean site, consistent listings, a few strong answer pagesMostly foundation work for the first 90 days

In practice, the same writer, the same pages and the same budget line cover both. If you are working out how much to put into search overall, our 2026 small business marketing budget guide has realistic ranges by business size.

Does SEO vs AEO work differently for local businesses?

Local is where the two overlap the most. When someone asks an AI tool for "a good pediatric dentist near Park Slope that takes weekend appointments", the answer is built largely from map listings, reviews and a handful of local websites. Google's AI answers lean heavily on Google Business Profile data. Other assistants pull from sources such as Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and TripAdvisor, depending on the platform.

That means local AEO is mostly local SEO done thoroughly: complete profiles on every major platform, categories that match what you actually do, reviews that mention specific services and neighborhoods, and service pages that answer the practical questions (hours, parking, insurance, price range). Our New York local SEO checklist walks through each step.

What does SEO vs AEO mean for businesses in the Gulf and MENA?

The principles are the same, but three details matter more if you sell in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar or the wider region.

  • Two languages, two sets of questions. Many customers search in English and ask AI tools in Arabic, or the reverse. An English-only site gives AI tools nothing to quote for Arabic questions. Proper Arabic pages, written for the region rather than machine translated, with hreflang tags linking the two versions, cover both.
  • Different local data sources. Google Maps is widely used across the Gulf, but local directories, delivery apps and marketplaces carry a lot of weight in how businesses are described. Make sure your name, location and services match across all of them, in both languages.
  • Feature availability varies. Google's AI features and some ChatGPT shopping features have rolled out country by country and language by language. Test your key questions from the market you are targeting rather than assuming what you see in New York is what a customer in Dubai or Riyadh sees.

Where should you start this month?

If you only have a few hours, do these five things in order:

  1. Run ten real customer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and note who gets named.
  2. Fix any inconsistent facts about your business across your site and your top five listings.
  3. Rewrite your single most important service or collection page so it answers the main question in the first two sentences and includes prices or ranges.
  4. Add four or five FAQs with schema to that page.
  5. Set up the GA4 AI referral report and add an AI option to your lead form.

Then repeat the prompt test in 30 days. Most businesses see something move within one to three months, faster for local questions and slower for competitive national ones. Keep doing the SEO basics throughout, because the answers are still built on them.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO just SEO with a new name?

Not quite. The foundations overlap: crawlable pages, helpful content and a trusted reputation help both. The difference is the goal and the format. SEO aims to rank a page so people click. AEO aims to get your business quoted or recommended inside an AI answer, which rewards direct answers, specific facts and consistent information about you across the web.

Do I need separate content for AI search and Google?

No. One well structured page can serve both. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences, use question-style headings, include prices, timelines and other specifics, add a short FAQ with schema, and keep your business details consistent everywhere. Creating separate AI-only pages usually produces thin duplicate content that helps neither channel.

How can I tell if ChatGPT is sending me customers?

Check GA4 for sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com, and look at conversions rather than visits. Add an AI tool option to your lead form's 'How did you hear about us?' question. Once a month, ask the same set of customer questions in each tool and record whether your business is named.

Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?

For most small businesses, blocking them works against you. If crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot cannot read your pages, those tools have less reason to cite or link to you. You can choose to block crawlers used only for model training while allowing search crawlers, but review your robots.txt carefully before changing anything.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Local questions often shift within four to eight weeks once listings, reviews and service pages are cleaned up. Competitive national topics usually take three to six months, because AI tools lean on pages that already rank and on mentions from other trusted sites. Track the same prompts monthly so you can see gradual movement rather than guessing.
